FISHING TOURISM ACTIVITIES

The fishing tourism is not only about boarding on a fishing boat, even though this is one of the most demanded and typical activities in the sector. This kind of tourism also comprises other set of activities that do not imply sailing. In fact, there are more and more natural places that offer alternative activities and information, especially addressed to children, adjusting to the different people interests.

Here you have the most common activities related to fishing tourism, which can be divided in two groups:

1. Activities on boat

Puerto deportivo de Roquetas de Mar

These are the most outstanding tourist activities and the most demanded ones among the different tourist offers in this sector. Most of the time spent during these activities is obviously on boat sailing in the open sea as long as the weather allows it. Also, other activities may be carried out at the harbour.

The most common activities are:

  • Boat visit. It is about recognizing and examining the different elements forming a boat by the tourists in such a way that they learn during the activity. Usually there is a visit to the facilities of a dock or a harbour.

  • Identification of different kinds of fish and description of a boat crew. Before getting on the boat, a series of tasks are necessary to have been done, like the correct identification of the types of fishes and species in the territory. Besides, each member on board develops a specific activity.

  • Choosing the fishing place. This one is about explaining the features of the place where we are fishing depending on the species that interest us.

  • Orientation and sailing. Marine charts are shown in order to determine a particular route to do.

  • Maintenance tasks and tool repairs. Explanation of the boat maintenance works, as well as the exhibition of the different fishing tools used regularly when fishing.

  • Fishing. The long awaited moment for the tourists. The tourists witness in person the different techniques and the whole fishing proceeding.

  • Identification of the fished species. This is when the tourists can see and touch the fish. The different species are separated and the fish to be sold are picked.

  • Cuisine. After a fishing time there is the possibility to offer the visitor a small tasting of the freshly-caught fish. This is one of the favourite moments of the tourists.

  • Observation of the sea nature and the geological formations. This is one way to learn and appreciate the fishing environment through a trip on a fishing boat. The sea and wind erosion have caused the formation of singular and remarkable landscapes on the coast very attractive for the tourists. They can enjoy wonderful views of cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, dikes and docks, etc.

  • Sunrise and sunset. The fishing tourism offers stunning views away from the artificial lights and urban areas, being an activity not very familiar to locals.

  • Marine mammals, birds and other animals. The observation of whales, dolphins and other similar marine mammals takes place on old whaling ships from where the tourists can see whales. Another significant tourist attraction is the bird observation offshore, along with many other marine animals, comprising from species such as the starfish and the sea urchin to corals, winkles, sea anemones and sponges.

2. Complementary activities

Within the fishing tourism sector there are other alternatives to a boat trip, that is, activities on land. Here we have the most prominent ones:

  • Walk along the dock or the seafront promenade, visit to a fish market, visit to the natural areas close to the harbour and visit to aquaculture and researching labs centres

  • Museums and exhibition centres. In many occasions towns and cities offer the possibility to visit exhibition centres or museums dedicated to the dissemination of the fishing activity.

  • Shellfishing. This is a common activity at sandy beaches and consists in the collection of shellfish in an sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

Also, we can enjoy festivals of music, cinema and food depending on the season, which complement and foster the quality of the fishing tourism.
