Sant Esteve Day

The festivity of Sant Esteve is a holiday in Catalonia celebrated the day after Christmas. The reason behind the date of this celebration is due to the fact that Saint Stephan was the first martyr to shed blood for Jesus Christ. It is considered to be the second day of Christmas and people in Catalonia commonly eat cannelloni, cooked by following a medieval tradition of using the leftovers from Christmas Day.

History

The Christmas festivity has always been celebrated for two days by eating with family. In most parts of Spain, the family celebration usually takes place on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, whereas in Calonia and the Balearic Islands they typically celebrate Christmas Day and Sant Esteve Day.

Another reason behind the date of this holiday is that people had to use carriages to travel in order to visit their families for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and as the trips took longer, the 26 of December was considered traveling day to get back to their homes. Also, Sant Esteve is considered to a day of relaxation after a tiring time celebrating with family.

Date: 26 December.
