This game consists in hitting a piece of timber in an obtuse angle on the ground with a cylindrical object, the so-called “marro.” The player throws the “marro” from a 14.5m distance to hit the piece of timber on the higher part. There will be 25 throws without taking into account the two first.

Calva

It is a wooden piece of holm oak or oak in an obtuse angle between 110º and 120º. The lower part will be the basis leaning on the ground, the so-called “zapata,” which will be around 23cm long and the upper part, the “alzada,” will have around 22cm.

Marro

During the first years of the game the “marro” was made of stone perfectly polished, but today it is made of iron in a cylindrical or oval shape with grooves and carvings (with the name of the player, weight, and measures). It is not more than 30cm long and its weight ranges from 2 to 3 kilos. The “marro” may be called differently depending on the place where this game has been extended.

The playing ground

The dimensions of the playing ground are variable, but usually 25m long and 5m wide. The throwing distance has been standardized to 14.5m.

In Madrid there is an association of calva clubs. Here is its website: www.calvamadrid.com
