FESTIVALS OF GETAFE
PATRON SAINT FESTIVALS
The patron saint festivals of Getafe begin with the taking of Virgen de los Ángeles's from its sanctuary in Cerro de los Ángeles to the local church on the day of the Ascension, 9 days before the oficial beginning of the festivities, 40 days after Easter Sunday. A great number of people traditionally attend to this event.
The next event is the opening ceremony with a speech of a popular public figure. For the next days there is a parade of various floats, a music and fireworking show, the so-called Quema de la Chamá (the burning of giant figures), bull runnings and contests. Many events such as exhibitions, cultural and children activities and the amusement park take place at Recinto Ferial (fairground) and Plaza de la Constitución. Apart from the concerts of famous artists, there are other dedicated to the local orchestra and the local bands.
The local festivals finish after 8 days with the return of the Virgin's image to Cerro de los Ángeles.
