FESTIVALS OF LEGANÉS

Fiestas Ntra. Sra. de Butarque

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE BUTARQUE FESTIVALS

The festivities to honour Nuestra Señora de Butarque, patron saint of Leganés, take place in mid-August with a great variety of activities for all ages and tastes.

The most traditional events are Fiesta Gigantera, Concurso de Estatuas Humanas (Human Statues Contest), the bull runnings and other bullfighting events. These activities are held at Recinto Ferial (fairground), Teatro Egáleo, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de España. Recinto Ferial hosts the most outstanding artists' concerts as well as the amusement park with lower prices on the so-called Día del Niño.

Regarding the religious tradition, there is the transfer of Nuestra Señora de Butarque image from its chapel to the parish church of San Salvador, where mass takes place in her honour. After this there is the concert of the municipal symphony orchestra.

To complete this varied activity offer the people can participate in joke-telling contests, ballroom dances, karaoke and other activities organized by the different "peñas" (associations or clubs of neighbours who offers food and drink such as chocolate, lemonade, paella, Spanish omelette, etc.)

The festivities conclude with the so-called Tranca Final at midnight along with a fireworks spectacle.
