FESTIVALS OF MAJADAHONDA

Quema de Judas

PATRON SAINT FESTIVALS

The festivals of Majadahonda to honour Cristo de los Remedios take place the third week of September and offer a wide range of activities for everyone. The main activities are intended for children, youngsters and the family.

The festivals programme includes bullfighting events, sports competitions, fun activities for children, concerts, religious events, parades, fireworks and a tapas contest.

QUEMA DE JUDAS FESTIVAL

In 2013, Majadahonda restarted to celebrate Procesión del Santo Encuentro, not carried out for 30 years. The procession consists in a Easter religious ceremony concluding with the so-called “Quema de Judas,” the burning of big figures symbolizing the extermination of sin and evil. This is an old tradition dating from the post-war period in the 20th century taking place on Easter Sunday.

Traditionally a big figure called "pelele" made of straw is built a few days before the burning. The face of this big doll is made with a balloon filled with straw and is dressed similarly to a scarecrow with the clothes donated by the people of the town. The people also make their own rag dolls representing Judas and throw them to the bonfires of these figures. After the burning, there is a popular ball and fireworks at the end of the night.

Currently, the festivity doesn't have strong religious features, since in the past there was a procession to honour the Virgin and the Baby Jesus before the "burning of Judas."
