COLOMBICULTURA (PIGEON BREEDING AND COMPETITION)

Paloma usada en colombicultura

The Community of Valencia is where colombicultura (pigeon breeding and competition) is more rooted in Spain. Maybe because the Community of Valencia is one of the Spanish regions with a longest traditions inherited from the Arabic.

The love of pigeons since the Middle Ages must be the reason that this practice started with the birth of a new breed after several crossbreeds, the so-called paloma buchona meaning pigeon with a bulky craw. In some cases, pigeon breeding gained relevance but far from being used for entertaining and fun activities. This caused a concern among the lovers of pigeons in Valencia, who tried to protect these birds.

In this way, the first pigeon association was founded to organize the pigeon competitions, having a special relevance in the Community of Valencia and being a traditional practice in some areas of the Region of Murcia.

It is considered to be an environmental sport with male doves and pigeons too, being scored for their beauty, flying skills and the persistence during the mating process.

To have a pigeon highly qualified for competitions, it needs to be trained, tested and a cross between different pigeon families, following a right diet and cleanliness avoiding diseases and getting better physical conditions.

The pigeon training begins when the bird is 3 months old, starting to be heat, being cageed with a paloma de plumín, a pigeon with a white feather in the tail, representing the symbol of sex for the pigeon. It is also advisable to leave the male pigeon and female pigeon loose for a few days.

After a while, the male pigeon will be caged with other male pigeons and a female pigeon for the female one to learn to defend herself.
