HANDCRAFTS IN VALENCIA

Many municipalities in the province of Valencia contribute to the special history and handcrafts culture that they all share, with Valencia having its own handcrafted products too.

FANS

In the centre of Aldaia there is a fan museum (Museo del Abanico), and the town is considered to be the birth place of the fan, since 25 out of the 37 fan craftsmen exisiting are located there. For the making of these fans paint, fabric, and even jewels are used, giving them a great value. Visitors will find handcrafted products by artisans from Aldaia, with a great variety of styles and models for all tastes from the most traditional ones to those representing famous artists' paintings.

SOCARRATS

Socarrat is a kind of decorative tile made of boiled mud. Generally, it is decorated in reddish, brownish or other dark shades. This kind of handcrafts comes from the Middle Ages and it was used to cover the gaps between the beams on the ceiling inside the old buildings, since it was the cheapest option. This type of decoration can be seen in other town such as Benetúser, Manises and Paterna. In this last mentioned town we can even visit an exclusive section of socarrats at Museo de Cerámica de Paterna.

The tradition of basketmaking is common in Gata de Gorgos. The handcrafted baskets are made of plant fibres from different plants such as palms, straw, esparto grass, wicker. The making of these baskets is always a natural process, respecting the environment.

FALLERA TRADITIONAL COSTUME

The traditional costume for Valencian women for the fallas festivity is one of the finest and best handcrafted works in Valencia. The costume is made of silk, metals (gold, silver), pearls and other jewels. Also, it is beautifully knitted with many different forms and embroidered figures, being undoubtedly a unique example of regional costumes in Spain.
