FESTIVITIES OF EL PUIG

Fiesta de la Mare de Déu

MARE DE DÉU DEL PUIG DEL SANTA MARIA FESTIVITY

It takes place on the first Sunday and Monday of September, there being a great number of music performances, mascletàs (firework shows), outdoor paella cooking and dinner, parades and processions. 

SANT ROC FESTIVITY

It is celebrated from the 15 to the 17 of August, but actually there are festive events during the whole month, such as bullfighting events: bull runs, bou embolat on every Saturday of the month. Among the most signicant ones, there is coetá and the Albades traditional singing on the 15 night. 

SANT PERE NOLASCO FESTIVITY

On the last Sunday of January the people in the town enjoy the traditional paella arròs amb fessols i naps thanks to the donations from the religious associations and the neighbours. Late in the afternoon some people play a traditional game called trencá de perols, consisting in throwing dead rats. This festivty around 1654, when some prisoners arrived on a boat from Algeria in really bad conditions, and the people of the town decided to feed them for a couple of days with this paella.

SANT ANTONI FESTIVITY

Coinciding with the second weekend of February, the main events during this festivity are the magnificent run and the blessing of pets honouring San Antoni. 

The popular run (Carrera de joies) takes places on Saturday around the beach of El Puig. At the beach there is a great race of horses trained to run on the sand. They are called joies, meaning jewels in Valencian, since the winners were awarded with jewels in the past. There are 5 races 1,500 metres long and three prizes are awarded.

On Sunday morning there is the blessing of pets, with many people attending and lining up even round the local convent for their pets to be blessed.

FALLAS FESTIVITY

In El Puig there are three commissions (also called fallas) for the fallas festivity: Doctor Pesset i Adjacents, Mar i Adjacents and Trencall i Adjacents. One of these three will be in charge of the organization of the festive events and the traditional cremà a week before the official fallas week.

EASTER WEEK

There are traditional processions throughout the week, being Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday the most significant days.

NIGHT OF SAN JOAN

On the 23 of June night, the eve of San Joan Day (midsummer night), the seafront promenade is full of people enjoying the night views of the castle with fireworks and bonfires on the beaches.

COMMUNITY OF VALENCIA DAY

Every 9 of October there is a series of acts at Hermitage of Sant Jordi commemorating the entrance of Jaume I and his troops in the city of Valencia, conquering it. With these acts, it is recalled that it was in El Puig, exactly where the hermitage is, where the conquest of Valencia started.

SANTA CECILIA HOLIDAY

Every 22 of November there is a holiday dedicated to the musicians' patron saint, there being musical performances.

INMACULADA CONCEPCIÓN FESTIVITY

Starting on the 4 of December the first festive events are to honour Santa Bárbara. Old and useless things as well as junk is collected for the later traditional bonfire. During the following days there is a great number of acitivities such as orchestra concerts, foreworks, parades, etc. It ends on the 8 of December, the Immaculate Conception Day. 

ANDALUSIAN CULTURAL WEEK

Asociación Cultural Andaluza de El Puig, a local association from El Puig founded in 1989, organizes every year the Cultural Week in June. These activities are intended for everyone of any age, including games, handcrafts, food contests, drawing contests, karaoke, as well as the traditional parade and flower offering to the Virgin of El Puig. 

There are also children's and adults' Queens of the festivity, and they are crowned on the 20 of May.
